Indonesia’s Ministry of Manpower has awarded the Gold Flag and Gold Certificate to KOP Surface Product’s Batam manufacturing plant for its achievements in meeting the highest Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards.
This latest certification, which is given only to a select group of companies and is valid for three years, is an affirmation of KOP Surface Products’ commitment to responsible corporate practices.
The company is a leading international equipment supplier to the oil and gas industry and manufactures a range of surface wellheads, trees, valves, and actuators at its Batam location. It already holds the internationally-recognised Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001:2007 standard; the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2004 certification for environmental management systems; and a blue rating from the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry’s Program for Pollution Control, Evaluation and Rating (PROPER), which shows that the company has met the required government standards for environmental management.
“KOP Surface Products is very proud to be able to fly this Gold Flag at the Batam manufacturing plant. It is not only a symbol of the effort we have put in to ensure the highest health and safety standards on-site but also a good reminder to keep up best practices. The health and safety of our employees and the communities as well as the environment that surrounds are priorities for us,” said Dave Finister, General Manufacturing Manager at KOP Surface Products.
The Batam manufacturing plant posted an audit result of 90.36 per cent – well above the 85 per cent minimum requirement – during a review of its safety management systems.
The OHS Management System or Sistem Managemen Keselamatan dan Kesehatan Kerja (SMK3) is compulsory for companies that employ more than 100 staff and whose operations include a higher degree of risk. Given KOP Surface Products manufacturing plant includes creating large components to be used in both onshore and offshore oil and gas facilities there is a naturally higher element of risk involved. However, the company was able to comfortably demonstrate the lengths it goes to in reducing risk as far as is possible. Audit reviews take account of company size, although any company of any size that records an audit score of less than 60 percent is liable to legal action.
The OHS Management System is an initiative of the Indonesian government to help protect employees’ right to safety and health in the workplace. More broadly, it also hopes to improve the quality of life and the image of the country, while simultaneously reducing the level of work-related accidents and illnesses thereby improving national productivity.
